Hard and soft corals on a shallow Andaman Sea reef in southern Thailand

The Kradan House Reef

Snorkelling straight off the east beach

The reason most island-hopping boats include Koh Kradan is not only the sand but what lies just off it. A fringing reef runs along parts of the east coast, close enough that strong swimmers can reach it from the beach. In good conditions you can see hard and soft corals, parrotfish, wrasse, clownfish in their anemones and, if you are lucky, a turtle grazing over the reef.

Like many reefs in the Andaman Sea, Kradan’s corals have suffered from bleaching in hot years and from careless visitors. They are still worth seeing, and they deserve gentle treatment: float, do not stand; look, do not touch.

Conditions vary with the season and the tide. From about November to April the sea is usually calm and the water clear; in the south-west monsoon, waves and stirred-up sand can make snorkelling disappointing or unsafe.

Top things to do at The Kradan House Reef

Snorkel from the beach

Ask your resort where the coral starts in front of it. Enter over sand, never over coral, and go at mid to high tide.

Take a longtail to the outer reefs

A private longtail can take you to reefs around Kradan and to Koh Chueak and Koh Waen, the classic snorkelling stops of the 4-islands trip.

Look for turtles and reef fish

Move slowly along the reef edge. Turtles are shy; never chase or touch them.

Try a dive

Dive trips in the Trang islands are usually run from Koh Lanta or the mainland; ask your resort whether any operator collects divers from Kradan.

Insider tips

  • Never stand on coral — wear a life jacket or fins if you need a rest.
  • Watch for boat traffic, especially near the landing points at midday.
